Most successful captains in IPL history start with one debate and end with one answer. MS Dhoni leads 235 matches with a win rate of 57.87% and five titles. Rohit Sharma has five titles too, but across 158 matches at 55.06%. The numbers settle it. Dhoni wins on both volume and percentage.

Since 2008, only nine captains have lifted the IPL trophy. Only two have done it more than once. Rajat Patidar holds the highest win percentage at 73.68% but across just 19 matches.

This list covers every major IPL captain ranked by wins, win percentage, and what their records actually say.

1. MS Dhoni (CSK/RPS) — 136 Wins in 235 Matches

The numbers start here and the argument ends here. No captain in IPL history has won more matches, led more games, or lifted more trophies than MS Dhoni.

MS Dhoni
Source: Outlook India

One hundred and thirty-six wins from 235 matches at a win rate of 57.87%, across five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. He also captained Rising Pune Supergiants for two seasons when CSK was suspended in 2016 and 2017.

Chennai Super Kings reached ten IPL finals under his leadership, the most by any captain in the tournament.

What sets Dhoni apart is not just the win count. It is the timing of his decisions in tight matches, bowling changes that nobody saw coming, and a composure that never changed, whether CSK needed 6 off the last over or 6 off the last ball.

2. Rohit Sharma (MI) — 87 Wins in 158 Matches

Five titles from one franchise. That is Rohit Sharma’s IPL captaincy record in a single sentence. He led Mumbai Indians to titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, making them the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history.

His win rate of 55.06% across 158 matches sits just below Dhoni’s, but his record of winning five titles with the same squad across an eight-year period tells you something about how he built a team rather than just managed one.

Mumbai Indians consistently developed young players under his leadership, with several going on to represent India.

He stepped down from captaincy after the 2023 season. The five titles will take a long time for anyone to match.

3. Gautam Gambhir (DC/KKR) — 71 Wins in 129 Matches

Before Gambhir arrived at KKR in 2011, Kolkata Knight Riders were one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the tournament. He turned that around immediately.

Gambhir led KKR to their first two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, winning 71 of 129 matches at a win rate of 55.03%.

The 2012 final became famous for the tactical decision to send Manvinder Bisla to open the batting.

Bisla scored 89 off 48 balls and KKR won the title. That kind of bold call defined Gambhir’s captaincy. He also captained Delhi Capitals at different points in his career.

His two titles from a franchise that had never won before remain one of the most significant leadership turnarounds in IPL history.

4. Shreyas Iyer (DC/KKR/PBKS) — 53 Wins in 93 Matches

The most recent title winner on this list after Patidar. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, the franchise’s third overall.

Across three franchises, he has captained 93 matches and won 53, maintaining a win rate of 56.98%, one of the strongest percentages in the top 10. He first made his name as captain at Delhi Capitals, where he led them to the 2020 final before injury ended his season early.

After moving to KKR, he built a side that dominated the 2024 season, finishing top of the table with 20 points before winning the title. He has since captained Punjab Kings.

Across three different franchises and three very different squads, his win rate has remained consistently above 55%.

5. David Warner (DC/SRH) — 40 Wins in 83 Matches

The most successful overseas captain in IPL history. Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their only IPL title in 2016, a season where he also scored 848 runs as a batter, combining the best individual batting season with a title-winning captaincy in the same campaign.

His win rate of 48.19% across 83 matches is the lowest among title-winning captains on this list, but the 2016 title run required winning three consecutive knockout matches, which SRH delivered.

SRH’s success in that period was built on disciplined bowling and Warner’s aggressive batting at the top, a combination he designed and executed as captain simultaneously.

No other overseas player has captained an IPL side to a title.

6. Hardik Pandya (GT/MI) — 36 Wins in 64 Matches

Two seasons with Gujarat Titans. One title and one final appearance.

That is Pandya’s captaincy record at GT, and it remains one of the strongest early captaincy runs the IPL has seen. GT won the title in their debut season in 2022 under him, becoming the only franchise to win IPL in their first year.

They reached the final again in 2023. His overall win rate of 56.25% across 64 matches spans his time at GT and MI. He moved to Mumbai Indians as captain in 2024, though that season proved far less successful.

His GT record, 35 wins from 60 matches at a strike rate that consistently beat par, is what earns him this position on the list.

7. Shane Warne (RR) — 30 Wins in 55 Matches

Nobody gave Rajasthan Royals a chance in 2008. Shane Warne took a franchise built on budget picks, uncapped Indian players, and raw talent, and turned them into IPL champions in the inaugural season.

He led 55 matches and won 30, maintaining a win rate of 54.54%.

The 2008 title run relied heavily on players like Yusuf Pathan and Shane Watson, who were relatively unknown at the time.

Warne used his bowling intelligence to get the best out of limited resources and made tactical decisions that more experienced captains with bigger squads failed to match.

The inaugural title, won by the least fancied team in the tournament, remains one of the most surprising results in IPL history.

8. Rajat Patidar (RCB) — 14 Wins in 19 Matches

The highest win percentage among any captain who has led more than 10 IPL matches.

Rajat Patidar

Patidar took over RCB midway through their 2025 campaign after Faf du Plessis stepped down and led them to their first-ever IPL title, ending an 18-season wait.

His win rate of 73.68% across 19 matches is the best on this entire list. In IPL 2026 he has continued as captain, adding more matches to that record.

The 2025 title run required winning under pressure in the knockouts, and RCB delivered in each match when it mattered.

He is the newest title-winning captain in IPL history and the one with the least experience at the time of winning it.

9. Virat Kohli (RCB) — 66 Wins in 143 Matches

The most experienced captain on this list without a title. Kohli led RCB for 143 matches between 2013 and 2021, winning 66 and losing 70 at a win rate of 46.15%.

His captaincy peak came in 2016, when he produced the greatest individual batting season in IPL history, alongside leading RCB to the final, where they lost to SRH. He led the team to the playoffs four times in 2015, 2016, 2020, and 2021.

The title never came under him. He stepped down after the 2021 season. RCB eventually won it in 2025 under Patidar’s captaincy, with Kohli still in the squad.

His win rate reflects the difficulty of building a consistent side at a franchise that cycled through overseas talent rapidly across his leadership years.

What Separates the Title Winners From the Rest

Nine captains have lifted the IPL trophy since 2008. Only two have done it more than once, and both built stable squads over multiple seasons rather than relying on one good run.

Win percentage without match volume tells half the story. Patidar’s 73.68% came across 19 matches. Dhoni’s 57.87% across 235 is the harder number to sustain.

Three title winners never topped the league stage. Warner won from third in 2016. Dhoni won from second. The IPL rewards peak form in knockouts more than fourteen-match consistency.

Conclusion: Dhoni and Rohit Lead IPL Captaincy With Five Titles Each

MS Dhoni leads all IPL captains with 136 wins from 235 matches and five titles. Rohit Sharma matches the five titles with 87 wins from 158 matches for one franchise.

No other captain has more than two. Rajat Patidar holds the highest win percentage at 73.68% across 19 matches. Virat Kohli has led the most matches of any winless captain with 143. Since 2008, nine different captains have won the IPL.

The gap between Dhoni and the rest in terms of total wins, total finals reached, and total titles remains as wide now as it has ever been.
