South Africa’s top T20 franchise cricket competition, the SA20 league, has rapidly drawn international notice for its fierce play and high-profile star acquisitions. Each SA20 side is owned by well-known businesspeople and groups that combine cricket knowledge with financial clout to guarantee excellent management and a sizable fan base.

These owners significantly influence team strategy, player acquisitions, and brand identification, raising the league’s prominence both domestically and abroad.

The IPL team owners are the owners of all six South Africa T20 League teams. In an effort to expand their franchise internationally, the Mumbai Indians purchased the Cape Town-based team and named it MI Cape Town. The Johannesburg franchise was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings, who now have their first international franchise.

The owners of the Delhi Capitals own the Pretoria franchise, whereas the owners of the Rajasthan Royals hold the Paarl franchise. The owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad have decided to call their team Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

List of SA20 Teams and Their Owners

Here is a list of all six SA20 franchises along with their owners, each backed by prominent IPL teams bringing global expertise and strong cricketing influence to the league.

Durban Super Giants

Durban is home to the Super Giants. The RPSG Group invested in an international sister franchise just a year after purchasing the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. They decided to establish their base in Durban, South Africa. Through its subsidiary, RPSG Sports Private Limited, the RPSG Group manages the Super Giants franchise in Durban. The group is a multinational company based in India that operates in several important industries.

The Durban Super Giants are well-known for their strong roster of both domestic and foreign players, which places an emphasis on explosive batting and all-around strength. Important players have included Jos Buttler, Heinrich Klaasen, and Aiden Markram. The team’s vivid blue and gold hues, which reflect Durban’s lively cricketing culture, stand for vitality, harmony, and excellence.

Joburg Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings, one of the most prosperous IPL teams, have expanded their roster by adding a few more players. Among them is the SA20’s Joburg Super Kings (JSK). Johannesburg-based Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited is the team’s owner. The venture is mostly owned by N. Srinivasan, the former president of the BCCI and ICC.

JSK is renowned for their aggressive yet well-rounded style of play, and with their potent batting lineup and formidable bowling attack, they want to rule the SA20. With a devoted following, capable leadership, and a winning mentality influenced by the CSK tradition, the Johannesburg Super Kings are a dominant force in South African franchise cricket.

MI Cape Town

Cape Town is represented by the MI Cape Town franchise. The lovely Newlands Cricket Ground serves as the team’s home field. They are associated with the IPL’s Mumbai Indians and are owned by Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd. The team won the last edition of the tournament.

MI Cape Town adopts the Mumbai Indians’ strategy of nurturing up-and-coming talent with seasoned international talent. The team’s colours, gold and blue, reflect the recognizable MI logo. With a nucleus of foreign players like Rashid Khan and South African players like Kagiso Rabada, MI Cape Town blends speed, strength, and tactical skill.

Paarl Royals

Boland Park is home to the Paarl Royals, a team based in Paarl. They are owned by the Royals Sports Group and have a connection to the IPL’s Rajasthan Royals. The Paarl Royals, who represent vitality and creativity, use the same shades of pink and blue as their IPL counterpart. A solid team culture that strikes a mix between seasoned foreign players and up-and-coming South African talent is the franchise’s main goal.

The team has relied heavily on players like David Miller, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, and Bjorn Fortunin. The group has a reputation for playing strategically under David Miller’s direction. Even though they have often advanced to the playoffs, they have failed to reach the final game.

Pretoria Capitals 

The Pretoria Capitals play at Centurion Park, which is their home stadium in Pretoria. They are affiliated with the Delhi Capitals of the Indian Premier League and are owned by JSW Sports. The JSW Group, an Indian multinational organization with operations in the steel, energy, cement, and several other industries, is the parent company of JSW Sports.

JSW Sports holds franchises in many Indian sports leagues in addition to its interest in the Pretoria Capitals. In the first season of 2023, the team, led by Rilee Rossouw, advanced to the finals but lost to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. They are an impressive squad to watch because of their steady results.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Based in Gqeberha, Sunrisers Eastern Cape is a team owned by the Sun Group that plays at St George’s Park Cricket Ground. They are associated with the IPL’s Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sun TV Network, which also owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is the team’s owner.

As the most successful side in the league’s brief history, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape have been outstanding under captain Aiden Markram, winning the championship in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Markram is no longer a part of the team for the upcoming season and Tristan Stubbs has been appointed the captain.
