The list of South African players in WBBL 2026 is much shorter than in recent seasons.

As of 1 October 2026, South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt is the only current South African international officially contracted for WBBL|12. She will continue with the Adelaide Strikers.

Former South Africa opener Lizelle Lee will also play for the Hobart Hurricanes, but she is now registered as an Australian local player after gaining permanent residency. She therefore does not use an overseas or South African player spot.

Several well-known Proteas who featured in recent WBBL seasons are not currently contracted for WBBL|12. Marizanne Kapp has withdrawn from the season, Nadine de Klerk remains uncontracted, and Shabnim Ismail is not on Sydney Thunder’s current list.

South Africa’s leading women cricketers have become a familiar sight in Australia’s premier franchise competition, bringing world-class skill to several of its teams. Their growing presence in WBBL 2026 reflects both the depth of the Proteas squad and the league’s reputation as a top destination for overseas talent. Tracking how these players perform across the season offers a useful glimpse into South Africa’s form heading into their upcoming international assignments.

She will continue a long association with the Adelaide Strikers after signing a two-season extension that runs through WBBL|12.

Wolvaardt first joined Adelaide for WBBL|06 after beginning her Big Bash career with Brisbane Heat.

She has since become one of Adelaide’s most important overseas players.

Laura Wolvaardt’s WBBL Career

Wolvaardt has built a strong record in the Women’s Big Bash League.

Before WBBL|12, her career record stands at:

She is set to reach the 100-match WBBL milestone during the 2026-27 season if she takes the field.

Laura Wolvaardt in WBBL 2025-26

Wolvaardt was one of Adelaide’s best performers during WBBL|11.

She played eight matches and scored:

  • Matches: 8
  • Runs: 264
  • Average: 44.00
  • Highest Score: 71*
  • Half-Centuries: 2

She was named the Adelaide Strikers’ WBBL|11 Most Valuable Player.

Her campaign ended before the end of the season because she left for South Africa international duty.

Wolvaardt’s Role for Adelaide Strikers in WBBL 2026

Wolvaardt is expected to remain a key top-order batter for Adelaide.

Her main strengths include:

  • Building an innings from the top
  • Playing pace with control
  • Finding gaps through the off side
  • Batting deep into an innings
  • Handling high-pressure chases

She also brings extensive international experience as South Africa’s captain.

Laura Wolvaardt and Adelaide’s WBBL Titles

Wolvaardt played an important role in Adelaide’s back-to-back championships.

The Strikers won WBBL|08 and WBBL|09.

Wolvaardt was part of both title-winning squads and top-scored for Adelaide with 39 in the WBBL|09 final.

Will Laura Wolvaardt Be Available for the Full WBBL 2026 Season?

Her exact end-of-season availability could still require monitoring.

WBBL|12 runs until 5 December 2026.

South Africa then begins a multi-format home series against India, with a one-off Test starting on 9 December 2026 in Gqeberha.

That leaves only four days between the WBBL final and the Test.

Cricket Australia has noted that the India series could affect Wolvaardt’s WBBL availability.

For now, she remains officially contracted to Adelaide Strikers for WBBL|12.

2. Lizelle Lee – Hobart Hurricanes

  • Team: Hobart Hurricanes
  • Role: Opening batter/wicketkeeper
  • Born: South Africa
  • Former International Team: South Africa
  • WBBL|12 Status: Confirmed as a local player

Lizelle Lee is a special case in an article about South African players.

She represented South Africa at international level for many years, but she is no longer registered as an overseas South African player in the WBBL.

Lee moved to Tasmania after retiring from international cricket and gained Australian permanent residency.

From WBBL|11 onward, she has been listed as a local player.

That allows Hobart to use its overseas spots on other international players.

Her unbeaten 150 remains one of the standout individual innings in WBBL history.

Lizelle Lee in WBBL 2025-26

Lee scored 305 runs during WBBL|11.

She then made an unbeaten 77 in the final as Hobart Hurricanes won their first WBBL title.

Why Lizelle Lee Is Not Counted as a South African Overseas Player

Lee is South African-born and represented the Proteas internationally.

However, after becoming an Australian permanent resident, she signed a new Hobart Hurricanes contract as a local player.

So for WBBL|12:

  • Nationality background: South African
  • WBBL registration: Local Australian player
  • Overseas spot used: No

This is why the official overseas South African count is one rather than two.

South African Players Not Currently Confirmed for WBBL 2026

Several South African stars who played in recent WBBL seasons do not currently appear as confirmed WBBL|12 overseas players.

1. Marizanne Kapp – Not Playing WBBL|12

Marizanne Kapp will not play for Melbourne Stars in WBBL|12.

She withdrew from the final year of her Stars contract.

The decision came with South Africa facing a busy international schedule soon after the WBBL.

Kapp had played in all 11 previous WBBL seasons before withdrawing from WBBL|12.

2. Nadine de Klerk – Currently Uncontracted

Nadine de Klerk played for Brisbane Heat in WBBL|11.

However, she is not currently contracted for Brisbane Heat in WBBL|12.

The Heat list her among their uncontracted players.

That means she should not currently be included in a confirmed South African WBBL 2026 player list.

3. Shabnim Ismail – Not Currently on Sydney Thunder’s WBBL|12 List

Shabnim Ismail played for Sydney Thunder in WBBL|11.

She is listed among Thunder’s previous overseas players, but she is not on their current contracted WBBL|12 squad list.

Unless a new deal is announced, Ismail should not be listed as a confirmed WBBL 2026 player.

4. Chloe Tryon – No Current WBBL|12 Contract Announced

Chloe Tryon has played several WBBL seasons and has represented teams including Hobart Hurricanes.

However, there is no current official WBBL|12 contract announcement for Tryon.

She should therefore remain outside the confirmed 2026 list unless a franchise announces her signing.

Why Are There Fewer South African Overseas Players in WBBL 2026?

International scheduling is one major reason. South Africa Women begin a home series against India just days after the WBBL final.

The revised India tour includes one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is. The Test begins on 9 December, four days after the WBBL final.

WBBL clubs have also changed how they recruit overseas players in 2026.

WBBL 2026 Overseas Player Rule Changes

WBBL|12 introduces a different recruitment system. The overseas draft has been scrapped.

Clubs can now sign overseas players directly. They no longer need to sign a minimum number of overseas players.

That gives teams more freedom to prioritize full-season availability.

WBBL 2026 Confirms 1 South African Player – Laura Wolvaardt for Adelaide Strikers

The South African players in the WBBL 2026 list currently have one confirmed Proteas overseas player: Laura Wolvaardt of Adelaide Strikers.

South African-born former international Lizelle Lee will also feature for defending champions Hobart Hurricanes, but she now counts as a local Australian player.

The number of active Proteas is lower than in recent WBBL seasons. Marizanne Kapp has withdrawn, Nadine de Klerk is uncontracted, and Shabnim Ismail and Chloe Tryon do not currently have confirmed WBBL|12 deals.

The list can still change if franchises sign more players or announce replacements before or during the tournament.
